Operation as a Windows Service

With WinLogDog installed as a Windows Service the program will run and send scheduled e-mails whenever the computer is running, no user needs to be logged on. When a user logs on the program will display the WinLogDog logo in the System Tray. Right clicking on this icon will display a menu with two choices.

Selecting Open will open the main program window and show the entire selected log file.

Selecting Exit will close the interface program and remove the icon from the system tray. The Windows Service will continue to run and send scheduled e-mail. Subsequent logging in will re-launch the interface program and display the icon. The interface program can be launched manually from the WinLogDog entry in the Start menu.

The service and interface program can be removed from the Add / Remove Programs Manager in the Control Panel. Advanced users can stop the Windows Service from the Services Manager in the Control Panel.

Operation as a Stand Alone Program

Select the WinLogDog entry in the Start menu. The program will show the entire selected log file

Configuring the Schedules

Select one or more of the following schedules and click Apply.

Configuring the E-Mail

Enter the name of your E-Mail host (server), subject, senders name, and senders E-Mail address in the From section.

Enter the name, and E-Mail address of the recipient as well as any CCs in the To section. Separate multiple entries by a comma.

Configuring the Log Files

Enter the full path of the log file you wish to monitor.

If a new log file is generated each day check the Daily Log File check box and enter the Date format of the date portion of the log file name. (example: If the log file name is log1221.txt then enter log*.txt in the path and mmdd as the Date format.)

If you did not check the Daily Log File check box then the Date / Time Format is used to determine how to parse the entries for the schedule you have selected. (examine this log file example: 39, 2002-06-23 06:01:56, 2003102, TCP port probe, 61.188.193.250, JY-SERVER, 24.8.91.69, ,port=445&reason=Firewalled, 3, A the date of the entry appears as 2002-06-23 so enter a Date / Time Format of yyyy-mm-dd.)

If you selected the hourly schedule be sure to include an hour indicator in your Date / Time Format (example: yyyy-mm-dd hh). Be sure to remove the hour indicator if you change your schedule to any other setting but Hourly. Version 2.0 does not support a combination of hourly and any other schedule selection. WinLogDog will not parse correctly as hourly requires the hour indicator and the other schedules cannot have this indicator.
